Helen Moore
Solo Horn
Helen started playing the tenor horn at the age of 10,
after threatening to call up the NSPCC and claiming to be a
neglected child every time her brother and dad headed off
to Downshire Brass Band practice in Northern Ireland.
She progressed to the senior band within a month, and a
year later departed to join the ranks of Northern Ireland’s
premier brass band, The 1st Old Boys, where she remained
for the rest of her time in the country. Here, she moved up
the line from 2nd to solo horn, competing at the very
highest level in the 2004 ‘Europeans’ and 2005 ‘Masters.’
Helen is a past member of the National Youth Brass Band of
Great Britain and has represented England in the European
Youth Brass Band.
She currently fits playing in a brass band around a
position teaching piano and brass in a primary school and
doing a music degree at Manchester University.
Jenny
McDermott
1st Horn
Jenny started playing in her school brass band and also the
Stockport Schools Prep Band. She soon moved up to the
Stockport Schools Senior Brass Band and travelled twice to
Heilbronn with the band. After being pensioned out of SSBB,
it was on to Stockport Silver Band where she spent a time
on Flugel, travelling again to Heilbronn.
From there it was off to Denton Brass Band, followed by
Airtours Band, Glossop and Todmorden Bands. Jenny then
spent 3 very enjoyable years at Mossley Brass Band. It was
here that Mossley Band were taped ‘on the march’ and she,
along with many others in the band, appears in the film
Brassed Off.
Jenny began playing for VBS Poynton Band in 1997.
Jillian Hazlewood
2nd Horn
After discovering the cornet at school Jill took to playing
like a duck to water. Three months of having lessons and
she was asked to join Chapel-en-le-Frith brass band. After
a short spell on back row, Jill moved to Whaley Bridge band
and quickly progressed through the cornet ranks till she
snapped up the chance of playing top chair.
Jill stayed there for 4 years until she was approached by
Poynton to become the newest member on their back row. Jill
joined the band on 3rd cornet but when the repiano seat
became avaliable she jumped at the chance.
It wasn't until she had a short break to start a family
that she came back and joined the band's horn section where
she proudly plays principal 2nd horn.
