A fond farewell for Sarah Johnson

After twenty years of service to VBS Poynton Band Sarah Johnson has left the band to follow other commitments. As many people know, Sarah was always 120% committed to the band and, it is true to say, was at the heart of everything the band did. It is difficult to outline here everything that Sarah did for the band, and not just the fantastic playing. Needless to say, she will be truly missed.

Every one in the band is very sad to see Sarah leave, but we all wish her well (and know she will still be around, supporting us as always) and look forward to seeing Sarah whenever she feels like popping in.

Successful Concert with the Wellspring

On Saturday 1st December the band took part in 'The Spirit of Christmas' Concert at the Plaza in Stockport on behalf of The Wellspring Charity.

The Wellspring have let us know '.....that they have received many favourable comments about the Show - so it seems to have been a success, which is due in no small measure to the Band's contribution'.

A Night at the Movies raises over £1,000

The Vernon Building Society held a brass band concert with a difference in aid of the Seashell Trust

In September, we held a band concert to raise money for the Seashell Trust, a charity based in Cheadle Hulme that provides educational and residential facilities for children and young people with complex disabilities.

The movie-themed concert was a great success with fantastic performances from the award-winning Vernon Building Society (Poynton) Brass Band, local singer Lauren-Lee Broomhead and the Singing Hands Choir, a sign language choir made up of pupils and residents of the Seashell Trust.

In total we raised over £1,000 for the Seashell Trust which will benefit their Multi Use Games Area.

Click here to watch a video of Lauren-Lee Broomhead performing Over The Rainbow with the band at this concert.

Summer Break

The Band is currently on it's Summer break. Rehearsals start again on Thursday 30th August for the 'new season'. Check out our Concerts page to see our full line-up of concerts and contests up to Christmas and beyond...

Last Night of the Proms, A Night at the Movies, collaborations with Macclesfield Youth Brass Band and Reddish Vale Technology College, and two contests that we haven't competed in for a good few years (Fleetwood and Preston) are just a few of the highlights for the coming months, not forgetting the many Christmas Concerts, and contests at Butlins and Blackpool in the New Year.

Our players need to make the most of this break as they will be very busy rehearsing and performing over the next few months!

Rain doesn't stop a Party!

Vernon Building Society (Poynton) Brass Band was one of the headline acts at last Saturday's Party in the Park at Poynton. This year the event also featured the award-winning tribute band Want U Back: Take That, whose mix of great singing, quick costume changes and breath-taking dance moves got the crowds into the party mood; the X-Factor & Eurovision performer Andy Abraham with his renditions of classic soul tracks; and not forgetting the charismatic compare Leroy Lurve!

Many thanks must go to Poynton Rotary Club who have made this event happen for the last 7 years, raising much needed money for charity, but of course the biggest ‘Thanks’ must go to the audience of 2000+ people who braved the weather and were still there at the end, in a huge deluge of rain, singing along to Rule Britannia as the band played Fantasia on British Sea Songs with all the evening's performers joining in on stage to finish off the evening with a rousing climax.

Hopefully we'll see you there next year!
