Key Responsibilities:
Musical Leadership and Artistic Development:
Take overall responsibility for the musical standards and artistic growth of the band, ensuring alignment with our charitable objectives.
Select and curate a diverse and engaging repertoire for rehearsals, public concerts, and potential educational initiatives.
Lead weekly rehearsals with clear musical instruction and constructive feedback, catering to a range of abilities.
Develop and implement strategies to enhance the band's technical proficiency and musical expression.
Conduct the band in public performances and competitions, showcasing the art of brass music.
Education and Outreach:
Contribute to the development and delivery of potential tuition or educational activities, in line with our charitable aims.
Foster an environment within the band that encourages learning and appreciation of brass music in its broader context.
Explore opportunities for community engagement and outreach performances to promote brass music education.
Member Development and Inspiration:
Cultivate a positive, inclusive, and supportive rehearsal atmosphere that encourages musical development and enjoyment.
Motivate and inspire band members to reach their full musical potential, fostering a deeper appreciation for the art form.
Identify and support individual and collective learning needs within the band.
Collaborate with the band committee on recruitment and retention, emphasizing the educational and community aspects of membership.
Artistic Vision and Planning:
Work collaboratively with the band committee to plan the band's performance schedule and artistic programme, ensuring it reflects our educational objectives.
Explore innovative performance formats and collaborations that can enhance public appreciation of brass music.
Remain informed about current trends and educational initiatives within the brass band movement.
Collaboration and Communication:
Maintain open and effective communication with the band committee on all musical and educational matters.
Liaise with potential tutors, guest artists, and community partners to support our charitable objectives.
Represent the band professionally and enthusiastically in public, promoting our educational mission.
Person Specification:
Essential:
Proven experience as a successful musical director or conductor, ideally with an understanding of community engagement and musical education.
Strong musical knowledge and a passion for the art and science of brass music in all its aspects.
Excellent conducting technique and the ability to clearly and inspiringly communicate musical and educational concepts.
Exceptional leadership, motivational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to foster a learning environment.
A demonstrable commitment to promoting public education and appreciation of brass music.
Strong organizational and planning abilities.
Alignment with the aims and values of a community-focused charity with educational objectives.
Eligibility to work in the UK.
Desirable:
Formal musical qualifications, potentially with an emphasis on music education.
Experience in delivering musical tuition or workshops.
Experience in community outreach or engagement through music.
Links with educational institutions or community groups.
An understanding of charity governance and volunteer management, particularly in relation to educational programmes.
Terms and Conditions:
This is a paid position, with an hourly rate negotiable.
Rehearsals take place on Thursday evenings, 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM at the Poynton Brass Band room.
Additional commitments will include concerts, contests, and occasional extra rehearsals.
