Strong Background & Musical Direction

Joey Wong Si Nok, a talented conductor, trombonist, and music teacher from Hong Kong has already become well established within the Northwest brass band scene. Recently completing a two-year tenure as principal trombonist with Wingates Brass Band, his mature yet fresh approach was highly valued.

His journey in conducting began at the age of 15, leading his secondary school's concert band. He further honed his skills through summer courses in the UK with Professor Tim Redmond of Guildhall and masterclasses with esteemed conductors like George Morton (Sheffield Philharmonic) and Howard Williams (RCM) during his university studies.

Under the guidance of Russell Gray, Joey is deeply committed to pursuing his conducting career within the brass band world. His roots also extend to wind ensembles, having previously conducted the Liverpool University Concert Band for two years, where he notably won "Best Conductor" for the 2022-2023 academic year. He currently serves as a joint musical director of the Adamson Military Band and assistant conductor of the Arts Bar Orchestra.

Enthusiasm for the Band

Vernon Building Society (Poynton) Brass Band, will be the first official appointment he receives within brass band conducting. Commenting on his new role, Joey shared his positive first impressions:

When I first went to Vernon Building Society (Poynton) Brass Band's rehearsal, I was really impressed by the enthusiasm and sound the band made, and the responsiveness I observed from the members. I quickly realised that I genuinely wanted to work with this ensemble. They are determined and willing to thrive in making music. I'm very happy to take on this role and hope to contribute significantly to this 200-year-old band.

Vision for the Band

The band looks forward to working with Joey as they continue their 200th-year celebrations. Their upcoming schedule includes the Whit Friday marches, and the "A Night at The Movies" concert on Saturday, June 21, 2025.

Band Manager, Vicky Penney, expressed:

We are very excited as a band to welcome Joey to the helm. A young, enthusiastic Musical Director with passion & attention to detail is what we are looking for, in order to take the band forward. Joey's enthusiasm was infectious the first time we met and we hope for a long and prevailing partnership.

Thanks and Best Wishes

The band would like to take the opportunity to thank Tom Hillary for his commitment and contributions during his time with us. We wish him all the very best for his future endeavours.
