Two Centuries of Music
The band's roots trace back to the early 1800s in Poynton's coal mining village. While the exact year of its formation remains unknown, records confirm it was thriving by 1824, with Lady Vernon even providing new uniforms in 1832.
Over the decades, the band flourished under visionary leaders. Charley Holt, conductor in the mid-1950s, saw the band climb from the 4th Section to the Championship Section in the 1960s. Later, Alan Lawton, who became Musical Director in late 1974, led them to win the National Regional Contest in March 1975 and many other victories, eventually earning an MBE in 2007 for his services to music. The band's legacy continues with recent leaders like Kevin Gibbs, who brought them back to the Championship Section.
A Steadfast Partnership
A key to this enduring success is our long-standing partnership with Vernon Building Society, who have supported the band as our main sponsor since 1988. Frank Needham, Chairman of the Poynton Brass Band, has previously shared:
We are proud to be associated with such a community-focused organisation... Their support has allowed the band to undertake some great projects over the years and we look to continuing this partnership.
This enduring partnership highlights the band's significance to the community and their continued vitality within the local cultural landscape. The Poynton Brass Band's celebration is a true testament to the power of music, community spirit, and dedicated support across generations.
